Thinking about your goals for the future can be tricky. Planning for how you’re going to achieve them can seem equally daunting.
But goal setting is an important aspect of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The NDIS says that “the participant’s statement of goals and aspirations … is the important first step in preparing the participant’s plan”. Read more about planning on the NDIS website.
During your NDIS planning meeting, which might be with the NDIS or with Local Area Co-ordinators (LACs), you will be asked about your goals for the future. This is because NDIS plans are based on your goals, and supports are funded if they can help you to achieve your dreams or goals.
At Blue Care, we encourage everyone who is preparing to transition to the NDIS to start thinking about their goals as early as possible. It’s never a bad time to dream big and start thinking about the type of life you want.
One Blue Care customer, Caitlin, met up with Commonwealth Games athlete Blake Cochrane to discuss their goals, and to share tips on successfully planning to make those goals a reality.
Blake says “there’s lots of different ways to achieve goals, and how you go about it is very important to the outcome”. Watch the video below.

Tips on setting goals
Take some time to imagine what your life would be like if anything was possible. Where would you go and what would you do? How would you spend your time and with whom? Then think about what you want to avoid in your life – What makes you unhappy? What’s stopping you from doing what you want to do? Try to imagine goals for all areas of your life, from your living situation, to independence, health and wellbeing, social activities and relationships, community, education, and employment.
To get you started, think about:
- What are your big goals? Ones that up until now, you’ve only dreamed about?
- What could be the steps to achieve your goals? These will be your milestones to know you are on the way.
- What support do you need to achieve your goals?
