Whether you’re about to have your first meeting with the NDIS, or you’re preparing for your NDIS Plan Review, it’s good to have some ideas in mind about your hopes for day-to-day life, your goals for the future, and the supports you might need to get there.

At BlueCare, we want to help you to get the most out of life, so we have put together some tips on pre-planning and goal setting for the NDIS.

NDIS pre-planning

Don’t wait until you meet with the NDIS to start thinking about your plan. Here are a few ways you can plan ahead:

  • Do some background research. Check out our tools and resources or our Frequently Asked Questions section for a good introduction to the topic.
  • Think about what supports and services you currently receive; how you spend your time; and your goals, such as for your living situation, independence, health and wellbeing, relationships, education and employment. Our NDIS planning app is designed to help you do this, or you might like to work through our pre-planning booklet.
  • Create a pre-plan. This is essentially a guide to take to your NDIA meeting and will keep the conversation on track. It should focus on your goals in life, how you’d like to achieve them and what supports you’ll need in place to make it all happen. Remember to include an overview of the supports you currently receive.

Setting goals for the NDIS

Setting goals is an important part of creating an NDIS plan, because supports are funded if they can help you to achieve your goals. At BlueCare, we encourage everyone who is preparing to transition to the NDIS or awaiting their plan review to start thinking about their goals as early as possible. It’s never a bad time to dream big and start thinking about the type of life you want.

Take some time to imagine what your life would be like if anything was possible. Where would you go and what would you do? How would you spend your time and with whom? Then think about what you want to avoid in your life – What makes you unhappy? What’s stopping you from doing what you want to do? Try to imagine goals for all areas of your life, from your living situation, to independence, health and well being, social activities and relationships, community, education, and employment.

To get you started, think about:

  • What are your big goals? Ones that up until now, you’ve only dreamed about?
  • What could be the steps to achieve your goals? These will be your milestones to know you are on the way.
  • What support do you need to achieve your goals?
