Getting to Know Your Retirement Living Consultant –Val
Tell us a bit about yourself – where are you from and what brought you to this role?
Hi, I’m Val! I immigrated to Australia from South Africa in 2001 and have lived in Mackay, Queensland ever since. I eventually found employment with Harcourts Real Estate, which helped me gain a strong understanding of the Mackay region, the Australian property market, building techniques, and the many different home styles. It also gave me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. I found the work extremely rewarding — matching people to homes and helping them overcome challenges along the way. Essentially, creating clients for life. Over the years, I worked with many retirees who were selling their homes to move into retirement villages. That gave me valuable insight into their next steps, and it felt like a natural progression to move from real estate into my current role as Sales Manager at Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village.
How long have you been helping people find the right retirement living option?
I’ve been in this role for 11 years now. No two days are the same, and no situation is the same. Once again, it’s about creating clients for life — matching people to their forever home and going above and beyond their expectations.
What do you love most about working in retirement living?
I love the relationships built with prospective residents. It’s often a challenging time for them, as the move can be a big step. They need to feel nurtured and reassured that they’re making the right decision. Seeing them happy in the days, weeks, months, and years that follow is incredibly fulfilling.
What makes the villages you look after special?
Carlyle Gardens Mackay feels like a large estate — but with old-fashioned care at its heart. People really look out for one another. We have a strong social committee offering a wide range of activities, all held onsite in our spacious auditorium and clubhouse. Our facilities are, hands down, the best in Mackay. There’s something here for everyone, and families are always welcome too.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
There’s nothing better than when a new resident gives you a hug and tells you how much they love their home and village life. Their smiles are my reward. I never tire of it, and I never take any part of their journey for granted. It truly is a new chapter for them.
Do you have a favourite memory or moment from working with a resident?
There are many, but one of my favourites is a couple who were initially very hesitant about the move. They ended up bringing their entire family in to meet me — and we all took a photo together in front of their new home. Everyone was dancing with joy! Like so many others, they said they wished they had made the move ten years earlier.
When someone is starting to think about retirement living, what advice do you give them?
Take your time and ask lots of questions — this is a big decision, and I’m always happy to give you the time you need. When you're ready, book a time to come and visit me at the village. If you can spare 1–2 hours, I’ll show you around and answer all your questions.
What’s your approach when helping someone choose a village?
I’m a good listener, and I take notes. Everyone’s situation is different. Once I understand their concerns, I work to ease their fears and help them see the positives. Once they feel comfortable, we take a look at the homes and explore all the benefits of the vibrant lifestyle Carlyle has to offer.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I have two sons and four grandsons, so most of my spare time is spent with them, especially watching sport — which I love! I also enjoy trying new restaurants, especially those with views of our beautiful Pioneer River or the ocean.
How can people best get in touch with you to learn more or arrange a visit?
The easiest way is to send me an SMS, give me a call 07 4848 2973, or email me. I always reply to texts and return calls and emails promptly. I’m happy to have a chat and answer any questions. You can also book a tour directly through our website. I look forward to hearing from you!
