Meet Rachel – Your Retirement Living Consultant

If you're thinking about starting your next chapter in retirement, there's no better guide than Rachel Mackey. Based at Fraser Shores in Hervey Bay, Rachel brings energy, empathy, and a touch of humour to every conversation about retirement living.

Tell us a bit about yourself – where are you from and what brought you to this role?

I’m originally from New South Wales, but I’ve lived all over Australia. I spent many years managing shopping centres, which gave me a strong grounding in people-focused environments. I chose to move into retirement living because I absolutely love living in Hervey Bay – the centre of the retirement universe! I figured I’d never be out of work here. Plus, I plan to work longer than Leo!

How long have you been helping people find the right retirement living option?

I can’t believe it’s already been five years. Time really flies when you’re doing something you love.

What do you love most about working in retirement living?

Honestly? The slobbery love from dogs of all shapes and sizes every day – plus the occasional cat on a lead, which never stops being hilarious. But on a deeper level, I love helping guide people through what can be a very emotional and life-changing transition. It’s a privilege to walk alongside them during that time.

What makes the villages you look after special?

Our villages are incredibly well-established with strong, vibrant communities. They’re located right in the heart of town, making everything easily accessible. They were also built back when space wasn’t such a premium – think generously sized homes, plenty of green space, and mature gardens that add so much character and charm.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

When a new resident takes the time to thank me and tells me how much they love their new home and the community they’ve joined – that’s everything.

Do you have a favourite memory or moment from working with a resident?

It’s always a joy to see a new resident who may have been previously isolated come out of their shell – whether it’s making a new friend, joining a group, or, in a few special cases, even finding love within the community.

When someone is starting to think about retirement living, what advice do you give them?

Visit all the villages. Go to the events. Talk to the residents and really get a feel for the community. You’re not just choosing a house – you’re choosing a lifestyle, a neighbourhood, and a place where you’ll truly feel at home.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Gardening! I think making compost is like magic, and picking your own veggies is one of life’s simplest joys. I chat to my chooks, grow flowers, and have been known to tuck one behind my ear from time to time.

How can people best get in touch with you to learn more or arrange a visit?

All roads lead to Rachel! Call, email, log on to the website, drop in – or even send a pigeon. I’ll respond to them all.

So, if you're ready to start your next chapter, come have a chat with Rachel at Fraser Shores. You might just find the place — and the people — that feel like home.
