At 89 years of age, Argyle Gardens resident Ted Slater has discovered the power of creativity to bring peace, purpose and connection.

A featured artist in the 2026 BlueCare Resident Artwork Calendar, Ted continues to inspire fellow residents through his artwork, poetry and the weekly art classes he leads within the village. As BlueCare launches the 2027 calendar competition, his story is a reminder that inspiration can often be found right outside your front door.

When residents at Argyle Gardens in Bundaberg gather each week for their art class, they'll often find Ted Slater encouraging everyone to pick up a paintbrush and have a go.

Known for his patience, enthusiasm and willingness to help others, Ted has become a much-loved mentor within the village, inspiring residents of all abilities to explore their creativity and discover the joy that comes from creating something with their own hands.

But Ted's artistic journey began under very different circumstances. 
After the passing of his wife, Ted turned to painting as a way to find comfort and purpose during a difficult time.

"I am 89 years of age and I started painting after my wife died. Painting brings me peace and happiness in creating something that gives joy to others."

What began as a personal outlet has grown into a passion that not only enriches Ted's own life but also brings happiness and connection to those around him.

Today, he shares that passion through the weekly art classes he leads at Argyle Gardens, creating a welcoming environment where residents can learn, socialise and express themselves through art. 

Finding Inspiration Close to Home

Ted was one of the featured artists in the 2026 BlueCare Resident Artwork Calendar with a painting inspired by the Chinese garden located just outside his front door.

For Ted, the garden is more than a beautiful landscape. It's a place of tranquillity, reflection and daily inspiration.

The breathtaking scene inspired not only his artwork but also a poem that accompanied his calendar entry.

My Front Garden

A moment that I celebrate every day 
is when I leave my unit for the outside world. 
I see my front garden, and my spirits rise 
when I hear the waterfall's song.

The Buddha sits so calm and thoughtful 
The stream meanders along its gentle path 
Past pagodas and herons along its way 
A secret to most people, 
except those who live on its banks.

Through both his painting and his words, Ted captures the simple beauty of a place that brings him joy every day, his own special corner of the world.

Making Art Accessible to Everyone

While Ted is an accomplished artist, he believes creativity isn't about talent or perfection.

It's about enjoyment, self-expression and having the confidence to give something new a try.

That philosophy underpins the weekly art classes he runs at Argyle Gardens.

Residents gather each week to paint, learn new techniques, share stories and encourage one another. Some arrive with years of artistic experience, while others are picking up a paintbrush for the very first time.

This year's theme, My Corner of the World, invites residents and clients to reflect on the people, places and experiences that make life meaningful.

For Ted, it's the Chinese garden outside his front door.

For someone else, it might be a favourite place to sit in the sunshine, a treasured friendship, a community activity, a beautiful view, or a simple moment that brings comfort and happiness.

Whatever it may be, every artwork has a story to tell.
