Three sisters still side-by-side after eight decades
After more than 80 years of life’s joys, challenges, change and loss, three sisters are still side by side, a rare bond now being lived every day at BlueCare’s Argyle Gardens Retirement Village in Bundaberg.
Mary, 82, was the first to move into the village two years ago, drawn by the welcoming community, support and lifestyle on offer. Six months ago, her older sisters, Josie, 90, and Davida, 92, joined her, bringing them together once more to share this special chapter in life side by side.
Where time so often changes families and life takes loved ones in different directions, the sisters know how rare it is to still have one another.
“Our whole life we have always been very close, and it’s funny how we’ve ended up together here, but it’s very nice,” Mary said. “We share a special bond, and I know how lucky we are to still have each other.”
Their connection stretches back decades to life in Julia Creek, where Mary and Davida both married two brothers who worked as graziers in the outback.
Through marriages, raising families, distance, life’s changes and the passing of loved ones, the sisters remained each other’s constant source of strength and comfort.
“We were always together, through everything,” Davida said. “The bond has only grown stronger over the years.”
“It’s very special to have reached this stage of life and still be together every day,” Josie said. “Not many families are lucky enough to share these years like this.”
Now reunited once more, the sisters have become much-loved members of the village community, spending their days volunteering, supporting fellow residents and enjoying simple moments together, cards, swims and cups of tea shared side by side.
“As long as we have each other, we’re home,” Mary said.
Argyle Gardens Village Manager Jeanie Maree Hughes said the sisters’ story reflected the strong sense of connection and belonging that makes the village so special.
“At BlueCare, we’re proud to create communities where residents can enjoy independence, support and meaningful connections in this stage of life,” she said.
Their story is a reminder that while life changes in so many ways, some bonds last a lifetime.
