What started as a special project between Carlyle Gardens Townsville resident Tonia and her two granddaughters has blossomed into one of the village’s most-loved community attractions, with plenty of help from Tonia’s husband Greg along the way.

Nestled around a roundabout in the village, Tonia’s enchanting fairy garden began late last year as a way to create something fun for her granddaughters to enjoy when they visited.

Together, they added tiny fairy homes, figurines and imaginative touches, creating a magical world where anything seemed possible.

Bringing the fairy garden to life

While Tonia and her granddaughters dreamed up the fairy world, Greg has been instrumental in bringing the garden to life.

He has spent countless hours preparing the area, weeding, hedging and creating pathways and special spaces for children to explore.

The fairy garden did not stay small for long. As other residents discovered the miniature wonderland, they began contributing their own ideas and treasures.

One resident donated ornaments, while members of the village woodwork group crafted stables for horse figurines. Grandchildren visiting the village also added their own creative touches, moving pieces, creating new stories and imagining adventures for the fairy residents.

With Greg continuing to tend and shape the garden, and residents and families adding their own touches, the space has become a true community creation, filled with surprises around every corner.

A place for generations to connect

For Tonia, the garden is about much more than fairy houses and figurines. It has become a place where generations connect, memories are shared and imaginations run free.

“It’s humbling,” Tonia said.

“I’m so happy people are coming out and finding their own joy in it. It gives people a chance to slow down, reflect and revisit happy memories from their childhood.”

She loves seeing residents reconnect with the sense of wonder they experienced as children and watching grandchildren bring the village to life through their imagination.

“Many of us would have loved something like this when we were kids,” she said.

“Now we get to experience that magic alongside our grandchildren. Every time they visit, they create new stories, move things around and imagine different adventures. It becomes something we can enjoy together.”

Creating a little everyday magic

The fairy garden has become a place where conversations start and neighbours linger a little longer.

Residents regularly stop by to see what has changed, while children delight in discovering new surprises hidden among the plants and along the pathways Greg has created.

“I’m chuffed that other people have embraced it and appreciate it,” Tonia said.

“People have really claimed it as their own, and that’s exactly what I hoped would happen.”

As the fairy village continues to grow, so too does the sense of connection it has created — bringing smiles, sparking conversations and reminding everyone, young and old, that a little imagination can create something truly magical.
