Anita has become something of an inspiration at New Haven Retirement Village. Her love of gardening has not only transformed the spaces around her home but also sparked a movement across the village.

What began as one resident’s passion has blossomed into a community-wide effort to bring colour, creativity, and connection to every corner of New Haven. Today, the gardens are alive with flowers, mosaics, water features and whimsical characters—each reflecting the people who make this village so special.

Anita – A Passion for Colour and Growth

Around her unit, Anita has cultivated a kaleidoscope of blooms that change with the seasons, while behind her garage she transformed a once-cleared patch of land into a thriving garden oasis. Her enthusiasm has encouraged others to follow her lead, inspiring neighbours to plant, pot and nurture their own spaces.

Her story is a reminder that one person’s creativity can ripple across a community—adding not just colour to the environment, but connection among those who share it.

Bob – Determination on Wheels

Bob’s story is just as inspiring. Though bound to his mobility scooter, Bob took on the huge task of reclaiming the overgrown front garden at one of the village entryways. With grit and determination, he filled five wheelie bins with weeds and clippings before carefully replanting and shaping the space into a welcoming display.

Today, visitors arriving at New Haven are greeted by Bob’s handiwork—a powerful reminder that mobility is no barrier when it comes to making a difference. His efforts have brought new life to one of the village’s most visible spaces, and his quiet dedication has inspired others to get involved, no matter their limitations.

Christina – Art, Spirit and the Finishing Touches

Christina, another resident, has added her artistic flair through a striking totem mosaic, which stands proudly among the blooms. Her work adds beauty and meaning to the landscape, celebrating the creativity that thrives within the New Haven community.

Around the gardens, water features bubble softly, creating a sense of calm and reflection. Scattered among the flowers are whimsical statues and playful garden ornaments—little characters waiting to be discovered by those who pause to look closer. Together, these touches bring humour, warmth and personality to every corner.

Beyond their beauty, these gardens offer something deeper. For many residents, gardening provides gentle movement and activity that supports mobility and independence. For others, it’s the social side—sharing cuttings, swapping tips, or simply stopping to admire a neighbour’s handiwork—that matters most. The gardens have become natural gathering places, where friendships flourish alongside the flowers.

At New Haven, the gardens are proof of what happens when people bring their passions into the shared spaces around them. They are not just colourful—they are living reminders that community, creativity and care can transform the environment, and in turn, transform lives.
