Residents and employees at BlueCare Homefield Mackay have two reasons to celebrate today following the official opening of a newly refurbished facility and the opening of a new Wellness Centre.

The Mackay facility has received a complete refurbishment of rooms and ensuites, significant upgrades to gardens, common areas, extension to the Memory Support Unit and the construction of a new Wellness Centre. UnitingCare Chief Executive Officer Craig Barke said BlueCare was excited to commemorate the significant milestone which demonstrates its commitment to ensure Queenslanders receive the highest quality of care.

“This exciting redevelopment has revitalised older buildings to create a modern environment for residents and our team.

“The new-look modern facility comprises of 56 refurbished rooms, with shared or single ensuites, plus a new 18-bed Memory Support Unit extension for the specialised care of people living with dementia.

“Designed in accordance with world standards, the new unit boasts purpose-built memory support beds, as well as newly designed gardens and outdoor areas.

Mr Barke said that through the support of funds from donors, BlueCare was able to build a purpose-built Wellness Centre that can provide respite to residents and community clients.

“We are incredibly appreciative of all our supporters, particularly those who have enabled us to build this space for the community of Mackay.

“Providing respite to clients, residents and their carers, the onsite day respite centre supports older people or young people living with a disability to participate in community life, feel socially included and maintain their independence,” said Mr Barke.

BlueCare’s Central Queensland General Manager Heather Henderson said that Homefield has continuously innovated and improved over its long and proud history to become a modern, comfortable and welcoming home and workplace.

“With a 50 year history in the area, Homefield holds a special place in the heart of the Mackay community,” said Ms Henderson.

BlueCare Mackay Homefield Aged Care Facility officially opened in April, 1962. The history of the facility dates back to 1957 when Alan and Enid Shepherd from the then St Paul’s Presbyterian congregation donated 5000 pounds towards the establishment of a centre in Mackay to house and care for older members of the community.
