Livia Kaminari has always felt a “caring calling” but it wasn’t until she started working in aged care that something clicked.

“I fell in love, to be honest,” says Livia, who works at BlueCare’s Carbook Wirunya Aged Care Facility. “I started studying and from the moment I did the placement, lifestyle was something that got me.”

An activity officer, Livia’s role entails supporting residents to engage in their chosen leisure and lifestyle activities. She has added therapy dogs and music therapy to the mix of activities on Wirunya’s calendar, and the goal is always smiles and fun.

“Just doing something different, and making them have fun, and knowing that I’m making a difference in their lives, means a lot.”

But it’s not always easy – Livia, who becomes very attached to the residents, recalls the first time one of them passed away.

“Every single time I was there with her, feeding her or helping her, I made her smile and that was when I clicked that lifestyle was something that I really wanted to do. So I’m changing their lives, and that’s my mission now.”

Livia is not alone – she says all the staff at Wirunya are very compassionate. “To work in this industry, it is something that naturally you’ve got to have.”

Another key trait for aged care, she believes, is teamwork: “We have all different departments that work together to give proper care to our clients.”
