Employee consultation and service model changes


Earlier this week Blue Care met with employees at seven of its aged care facilities across regional and remote Queensland regarding proposed changes to work hours and the service model in place at the following facilities:

  • Blue Care Canowindra (in Kingaroy)
  • Blue Care Capricorn (in Yeppoon)
  • Blue Care Gracemere (in Rockhampton)
  • Blue Care Alkira (in Toogoolawah)
  • Blue Care Glenwood (in Lowood)
  • Blue Care Edenvale (in Gladstone)
  • Blue Care Homefield (in Mackay)

“The wellbeing of Blue Care’s residents and employees is central to everything we do and is at the forefront of every decision we make,” said Blue Care Group Executive, Alan Wilson.

“We are not making any changes at our facilities that introduce risk for our residents or employees.

“Despite recent misleading reports to the contrary, Blue Care is not transferring the clinical responsibilities of its Registered Nurses (RNs) to Personal Carers (PCs) in its aged care facilities. Blue Care remains fully committed to having its RNs provide clinical care and supervision across its aged care facilities.

“Blue Care personal carers do not and will not have responsibility for the administration of medication to residents and will continue to practice in accordance with all applicable Federal and State legislation and regulations.

“Blue Care RNs will continue to have special responsibility for the administration of complex and high risk medications to residents.

“Blue Care personal carers are responsible for the same basic care tasks that family members regularly undertake in their own homes when caring for a loved one.

“What we are doing, however, is upskilling our personal carers with additional training so they can provide increased support to our RNs and ENs.

“We are also working to improve the quality of care that residents receive by increasing the frequency with which the same Blue Care employees work with the same residents, creating a family-like environment within our aged care facilities.

“This personalised model of care is already widely in place across Australia’s aged care sector and is designed to meet the community’s expectation of affordable access to high-quality person-centred care from people who live and work within their local community.

“We know that our ability to continue delivering high-quality care to the Queensland community is dependent upon our hardworking and dedicated employees and volunteers whom we value greatly,” said Mr Wilson.
