Events


We celebrate a variety of events throughout the year including National Carers Week and International Volunteer Day, as well as open days at our residential facilities, fundraising events and staff recognition evenings.

This year Blue Care is celebrating 60 years of rich history, and to mark this milestone services are holding events across the state.

Arthritis may be mild, moderate or severe and overall it is the major cause of disability and chronic pain in Australia, costing the Australian community $23.9 billion dollars each year.

21 March - Harmony Day

The message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world.

There are many ways we can celebrate Harmony Day – through sport, dance, art, film, music, storytelling, cooking and sharing cultural meals. By participating in Harmony Day activities we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and make it a better place.

Harmony Day is managed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Since 1999 Harmony Day has been widely celebrated across schools, childcare centres, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies.

23 March - Earth Hour

At 8.30pm 23 March 2013, Earth Hour will once again sweep around the world as people switch off their lights to celebrate and signal their care for the planet. Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world unite each year to support the largest environmental event in history – Earth Hour.

More than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2012, sending a powerful message for action to save the planet. This year, more than 200,000 individuals accepting I Will If You Will challenges on YouTube to turn their symbolic action for the planet into an ongoing commitment to a sustainable future.

World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the founding of WHO in 1948. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world. The theme for 2013 is high blood pressure.

13 - 19 May - National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than 6 million Australians who volunteer.

Australian volunteers are essential to society, and many charities would struggle to survive without the support of their volunteers. Australian volunteers contribute more than 700 million hours of community service to so many areas of society, including community health care, heritage and arts, environment conservation, emergency services, education, social justice and sports. NVW provides a platform to pay tribute to these volunteers who donate their time and energy to help others.

7 - 14 July - NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.

NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields.

Activities take place across the nation during NAIDOC Week in the first full week of July. All Australians are encouraged to participate.

Seniors Week provides an opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages and backgrounds to join together and celebrate the valuable contribution of seniors.

Seniors Week aims to:

  • promote positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing
  • support community participation and activity by older people, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
  • enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.

From the first visit made by Olive Smith (nee Crombie), by tram – to a new era of person centred “Tailor Made” services, making a difference in peoples’ lives is at the heart of all we do.

This year Dementia Awareness Week will run from Monday 16th – Sunday 23rd September.

The theme will focus on brain health and the week will feature Dr Kristine Yaffe, MD giving a series of public lectures in selected major capital cities across Australia.

Grandparents Day is a chance for grandchildren, children and the community to thank grandparents for their love and support.

Grandparents Day will be celebrated annually in Queensland on the last Sunday in October. In 2013, Grandparents Day will take place on Sunday 27 October.

27 October - 2 November - Safe Work Australia Week

National Safe Work Australia Week is held annually in October to raise awareness of workplace safety. The Week aims to encourage all working Australians to get involved in and concentrate on safety in their workplace to reduce death, injury and disease. 2013 Safe Work Australia Week follows a very successful Week in 2012 in which 699 Australians became Safety Ambassadors.

In November 1996, Planet Ark founded National Recycling Week to bring a national focus to the environmental benefits of recycling. Now in its 18th year, this established and highly regarded annual campaign continues to educate and stimulate behaviour change, by:

  • Promoting kerbside, industrial and community recycling initiatives
  • Giving people the tools to minimise waste and manage material resources responsibly at home, work and school.

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) will be celebrated on 5 December. IVD is a United Nations auspiced day that commenced in 1985 and is now celebrated around the world as a day to recognise the contribution of volunteers in their communities.
